Recently, carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile have implemented new registration requirements for local 10-digit numbers. We want to make sure you understand what’s happening, how this impacts you, and what Text In Church is doing to make sure your local 10-digit phone number sees this increase in message deliverability and security.
All major US carriers – Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile (which includes Sprint) are now live with their A2P 10DLC services. HUH? Yeah, I know… let’s cover the 2 acronyms first.
A2P stands for application-to-person texting, which means you’re using a texting service, like Text In Church, to send and receive messages.
10DLC is simply a shortened way to say 10-digit long code. It’s referring to your typical 10-digit local phone number (i.e. 816-482-3337 – that’s Text In Church’s local phone number if you want to text us any questions :).
Now that carriers are offering A2P 10DLC services, organizations using 10DLCs must register their phone number(s) to carriers for those services.
Carriers are also demanding that traffic on shared short codes (5 to 6 digit numbers) is migrated to dedicated 10DLCs. To carriers, shared short codes represent a high spam risk and can lead to shared short codes being blocked entirely. We no longer offer a shared short code as a sending option for this reason.
Up to this point, 10DLCs were designed for person-to-person (P2P) communications. Because of that, local phone numbers have had slower sending capabilities and have lacked appropriate security standards.
Cell phone carriers considered 10DLCs an unsanctioned route to send text messages. For this reason, local phone numbers were subject to higher standards of SPAM compliance and message throttling. This resulted in organizations using short codes or 800 numbers to send text messages.
However, these new A2P 10DLC services from the carriers are great news!
It gives us an opportunity to register the local 10DLC you have through Text In Church. After this registration process, the messages you send from your Text In Church phone number will have increased stability, delivery reliability, delivery speed, and security.
Extra security is always good and the highest deliverability of your messages is always our #1 priority.
