5 Leadership Traits That Matter More Than Your Title

Leadership Isn’t About Your Title, It’s About How You Show Up
Whether you're leading a church, a team, or a business, your effectiveness doesn’t come from what’s on your business card. It comes from your character.
The best leaders I know didn’t arrive fully formed. They built these traits through trial, feedback, and reflection. Here are five that have shaped my own leadership, and continue to shape the culture we’re building at Text In Church.
1. Empathy
Leading with Understanding
Empathy isn’t about being soft, it’s about being present.
For me, that starts at home. I drive my kids to school every morning. It’s a non-negotiable that shapes how I build my week. If I want that kind of flexibility, I owe it to my team too.
At Text In Church, we’ve made margin for life, not just work. That means flex time, early outs, and support that actually supports. Because when you care for people, they lead better too.
2. Vision
Seeing the Bigger Picture
Vision isn’t a slogan. It’s a compass.
When COVID hit, our growth surged. But as the dust settled, we realized we needed to evolve. That’s when we launched “Calling”, a bold shift beyond texting toward full communication support for churches.
We also raised the bar: a billion church connections. That’s our North Star now. And we don’t just repeat it, we reinforce it through rhythm, goals, and story.
If your team can’t see the vision, they won’t follow it. Make it visible. Make it real.
3. Resilience
Pushing Through Setbacks
Setbacks are part of the journey.
One of our toughest moments was losing Jake, our founding developer. He didn’t just leave, he stayed six months to train his replacement. That said something about our culture.
Resilience isn’t about white-knuckling it. It’s about creating an environment where people want to finish well. That takes trust. That takes grace. That’s leadership.
4. Servant Leadership
Putting Others First
No one at Text In Church works for me, I work for them.
That’s the mindset I try to model. Give people the tools they need. Trust them to use them. And be there when they need backup.
Mistakes happen. Growth happens too. When you lead with service, people rise. When you lead with control, they shrink.
Leadership isn’t a spotlight, it’s a flashlight. Help people see the path forward.
5. Accountability
Owning Your Commitments
Say what you’ll do. Do what you said.
That’s the rhythm we run at Text In Church. When we launched Calling, it stretched us. But we kept showing up. Kept adjusting. Kept moving.
Accountability builds trust. Not perfection, trust. And trust is what gives your team the confidence to risk, create, and lead.
Final Thought: You Don’t Need a Title to Lead
These five traits aren’t reserved for senior leaders or executive teams.
- Empathy
- Vision
- Resilience
- Servant leadership
- Accountability
They can be learned. Practiced. Modeled.
So which one’s your growth edge right now?
I’d love to hear your story, drop a note or reach out directly. And if you want to lead more clearly this week, start by making people feel seen.
Lead With Clarity, Not Just a Title
The most impactful leaders aren’t defined by titles, they’re defined by how they show up every day. Whether you’re leading from the front or influencing from within a team, character-driven leadership builds healthier teams and stronger cultures.
If you’re ready to lead with more clarity, focus, and purpose, regardless of your title, I’ve put together a 30-Day Leadership Plan to help you take practical next steps.
