FOCUS: Follow One Course Until Successful

The Power of Focus
In a world that celebrates hustle and multitasking, choosing to focus feels almost radical.
We're surrounded by noise. Every week brings a new idea, a new trend, a new opportunity that promises better results. And if you're wired like me, that's fuel. I love building. I love creating. I love chasing potential.
But here’s what I’ve learned, usually the hard way:
You don’t need more ideas. You need more focus.
The Power of One Course
There’s a phrase I’ve come to love and repeat often:
FOCUS: Follow One Course Until Successful.
Those six words have changed how I lead, how I build, and how I coach others to do the same.
Because the truth is, shiny object syndrome is real. Especially for entrepreneurs and church leaders. We care deeply. We want to help. We see opportunities everywhere, and we want to say yes to them all.
But here’s the trap: when you chase everything, you finish nothing.
Learning the Hard Way
Early on at Text In Church, I fell into this more times than I’d like to admit.
We’d launch a new tool before the last one was fully adopted.
We’d start a new partnership before following through on the previous one.
The calendar was full, the energy was high, but the results? Inconsistent at best.
It wasn’t because our team wasn’t working hard. It was because we were working wide instead of deep.
The Five Project Mental Model
One of the most helpful mental models I’ve come across is this:
Imagine you have five projects, each taking one month to complete.
If you try to juggle all five at once, splitting your attention, nothing gets done until month five. No progress, no wins, no momentum.
But if you focus, one project at a time, you finish the first in month one, the second in month two, and so on. By the end of five months, you’ve finished all five and enjoyed four extra months of return from the early projects.
That’s the power of focus.
It’s not just about finishing. It’s about finishing in order, so you can build momentum along the way.
Better Questions Lead to Better Focus
At Text In Church, we’ve learned to ask better questions:
- What is the single most important thing we need to execute this quarter?
- What would it look like to give that our full attention and energy?
- What do we need to say no to, or delay, to protect that focus?
We don’t always get it right. There are still moments when distractions sneak in. But more often than not, we come back to this: Follow one course until successful.
The Real Impact of Focus
The leaders and teams who make the biggest impact aren’t the ones doing the most. They’re the ones doing what matters most, and doing it well.
When you focus, you gain clarity. You know what to say yes to. But even more importantly, you know what to say no to.
You build momentum. You stack wins. You create breakthroughs that only happen when energy compounds over time.
And maybe most importantly, you reduce burnout.
From Stress to Fulfillment
Scattered energy leads to stress.
Focused energy leads to fulfillment.
When your team knows where you’re going and why it matters, they can show up with purpose. They can run harder and longer, not out of pressure, but out of clarity.
This is true for church teams, too. I talk to pastors all the time who feel like they’re doing everything, and yet it feels like nothing’s working.
My encouragement is always the same:
Step back. Refocus. Simplify. Pick the one thing that matters most, and do that until it’s done.
Three Simple Truths
Because momentum beats motion.
Progress beats activity.
And clarity beats complexity.
So here’s the question I’ll leave you with:
What is your course right now?
Not your wishlist. Not your “it would be nice if.”
Your course, the thing you’ve committed to finishing.
And what’s trying to pull your focus away from it?
FOCUS. Follow One Course Until Successful.
It might not feel exciting in the moment. But trust me, it’s what leads to real traction, real impact, and real results.
Stay the course. Finish what matters. Then move to the next.
That’s how we build things that last.
Watch: How to Stay Focused When Everything Feels Important
If this topic hits home, I recently shared more about how I’ve learned to fight distraction and protect focus as a leader in a short video on my YouTube channel.
In it, I talk about the real tension between opportunity and overwhelm, and how to build habits that keep you centered on what matters most.
It’s a quick, practical breakdown of what it really looks like to “Follow One Course Until Successful.”
