Fulfillment Fridays: Leading from a Place of Fullness

There’s a difference between time off and time well spent.

That’s something I’ve come to understand more deeply over the years, especially as life and leadership have become fuller and faster.

At Text In Church, we’ve started something simple but meaningful that reflects that idea. We call it Fulfillment Fridays.

While it might sound like a catchy name for a summer perk, it’s actually become a cultural anchor for our team.

What Fulfillment Fridays Look Like

Every Friday during the summer, and every fifth Friday that pops up throughout the year, we hit pause.

Not just to log off. Not just to get away from work. But to lean into something more intentional. We take time to refuel what matters.

Some people spend it on the lake. Others take a long walk or go on a short trip with their kids. A few pick up a project that’s been sitting on the shelf, while others sit in silence and enjoy a rare moment of stillness.

And some just spend time doing whatever fills their tank back up again.

That’s the point. It’s not about productivity. It’s about purpose.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

It’s not a PTO. It’s not a bonus. It’s a commitment to rhythm and restoration.

Because I believe healthy leaders build healthy teams. And if we’re not taking care of the people doing the work, including ourselves, then eventually, the work suffers.

I’ve learned the hard way: you can’t pour out what you haven’t filled up.
You can’t lead with clarity if your soul is scattered.

And you can’t be fully present with your team, your family, or your community if you’re constantly running on fumes.

Fulfillment Fridays are a small but powerful step toward fixing that.

The Unexpected Business Case

Here’s the surprising part, it’s not just good for people. It’s good for business.

These Fridays are a practical way we live out our values. They remind us that leadership is about margin, sustainability, and meaning, not just metrics.

It helps each person remember they’re more than the work they do. They’re humans with lives, passions, stories, families, and needs that go far beyond their job description.

And when our team comes back on Monday after a Fulfillment Friday, they don’t just show up.

They engage.
They create.
They lead better.

They bring energy and clarity that you can’t manufacture with a motivational quote or a spreadsheet.

Why? Because they’ve reconnected with what matters. And that kind of refueling produces better work than any caffeine boost or brainstorm ever could.

What Fulfillment Looks Like for Me

For me, fulfillment looks like a quiet morning with coffee, reading something not related to work.

It’s coaching my son’s soccer team or jamming on the piano with my daughter.
It’s taking Kelly out for lunch in the middle of the day, just because we can.

It’s making space for the kinds of things that remind me leadership isn’t the only identity I carry.

When I get that time, I lead better. I think it is clearer. And I’m reminded that rest isn’t the opposite of progress, it’s what makes it sustainable.

Watch: Fulfillment Fridays: How Rest Builds Stronger Teams and Sustainable Leaders

I recently shared a short video about the heart behind Fulfillment Fridays, why we started them, the impact they’ve had on our team, and how you can build a similar rhythm in your own leadership.

In the video, I walk through the mindset shift that moved us from time off to time invested, and how that simple change has transformed the way we work, rest, and lead.

Then, take a few minutes to reflect on what “fulfillment” really looks like for you, and how you can start building that rhythm into your Fridays.

Your Next Step

You don’t need a fancy policy to start this rhythm. You just need to ask yourself one question:

What would it look like to build more fulfillment into your life and leadership?

Maybe it’s a weekly rhythm.
Maybe it’s monthly.

Maybe it’s just carving out two hours on a Friday to breathe, think, and enjoy what’s already in front of you.

We’re not perfect at this. We miss it sometimes. But we’re committed to it, because refueled people build better things.

So the next time a fifth Friday pops up on your calendar, or the summer pace starts pressing in, don’t ignore the invitation.

Slow down. Pay attention to what fills you. And remember:
Fulfillment isn’t selfish. It’s strategic.

Let’s lead from a place of fullness. One Friday at a time.
