What to Do When No One Believes in Your Idea

The Beginning: A Booth, a Dream, and a Lot of Hope
Before Text In Church was a product, before we had a team, before we had customers, we had a booth.
Just me and my dad.
Our LLC had just been formed, and we were fired up to bring this idea to the world for the very first time. We set up a church conference with about 2,000 attendees. This was our big shot.
We had a banner, a basic pitch, and a whole lot of hope.
We weren’t just there to sell. We were there to learn, to talk with as many church leaders as possible.
Or at least, that was the plan.
The Moment No One Believed
I’ll never forget those conversations.
We’d say, “Hey, we’re Text In Church! We help churches follow up with guests and engage their people using text messaging.”
And over and over, I heard the same thing:
“Texting? In church? Why would I want that?”
“I’m trying to get people off their phones during the service.”
“That’ll never work with my people.”
Some didn’t say it out loud, but the look said enough.
They didn’t get it.
And honestly, it was crushing.
We left that conference with no traction. No momentum. No buzz. Just one big question ringing in my head:
Were we wrong?
I remember looking at my dad and saying, “Either we’re totally off here… or we’re just ahead of our time.”
And truthfully? I wasn’t sure which one it was.
The Crossroads of Conviction
That moment became a turning point.
We had already seen texting work. I’d personally used it with 50 churches in my ministry, and it had driven real results. We knew it was effective.
But convincing others, that was a whole different challenge.
That’s when I had to decide:
Do I listen to the crowd, or trust what I’ve seen?
Do I play it safe, or double down on what I believe?
We chose to double down.
Because leadership isn’t just about what you believe when everyone agrees with you.
It’s about what you hold onto when they don’t.
Now, I’ll be the first to say, there’s a fine line between conviction and delusion. You’ve got to keep asking, “Is this working?” “Am I learning?” “Can this scale?”
But there’s also a kind of grit great leaders learn to build, the kind that says, “I might be early, but I’m not wrong.”
Fast Forward: Belief Becomes Breakthrough
Today, tens of thousands of churches use texting to follow up with guests and connect with their communities.
What once felt like a punchline is now a best practice.
But it didn’t happen because everyone believed from the start.
It happened because we did.
We kept showing up.
Keep listening.
Keep refining the message and proving the value.
And little by little, churches began to see what we’d seen all along.
Believe Even When They Don’t
Every meaningful movement starts with someone who believes before it’s obvious.
So if you’re in that early stage, if you’re getting more pushback than buy-in, don’t quit.
Pause. Evaluate. Learn.
But if you’ve seen it make a difference, keep going.
Because leadership isn’t about waiting for the world to catch up.
It’s about building what the world doesn’t know it needs yet.
You don’t need everyone to believe.
You just need to believe enough to keep going.
