The Fight That Wasn't a Fight: Why Every Leader Needs a Strengths Coach

The Moment I Froze

Have you ever watched something unfold in real time and think, “This isn’t good… but I don’t know how to stop it”?

That was me a few years ago during what was supposed to be a milestone moment for our team at Text In Church, our very first full-team retreat.

The room was buzzing with energy. Everyone was excited. And then it happened, a disagreement between our lead developer and my dad, Don, who’s also our co-founder.

Both men are strong leaders. Both were making good points. And both thought the other was completely wrong.

No yelling. No drama. But the air went ice cold.
It was one of those moments where everyone looks around like, “Wait… are they actually mad?”

And I froze.

I should’ve stepped in to help clarify what was really going on. But instead, I watched a simple difference in perspective turn into an uncomfortable, confusing moment for the whole team.

The wild part? They weren’t even mad at each other. It wasn’t a fight, it was a collision of strengths neither of them (or I) knew how to navigate.

When Leadership Feels Like Guesswork

That retreat moment stuck with me.

I realized I didn’t just need help managing conflict, I needed help understanding why people respond the way they do. Because when you don’t know what drives someone, every disagreement feels like a mystery.

That’s when I reached out to Pastor Adam Musto, a Certified Strengths Coach. What started as curiosity turned into one of the best leadership rhythms we’ve ever built.

Now, every month, Adam and I meet one-on-one. Every quarter, he leads a full team session. And when someone joins Text In Church, one of the first things they do is take the CliftonStrengths Assessment.

The Framework That Changes Everything

We don’t use it to put people in boxes.
We use it to open up understanding.

Because here’s the truth: people don’t come with instruction manuals.

When you understand how someone thinks, what energizes them, and what drains them, you unlock a new level of empathy and effectiveness.

StrengthsFinder gives language to what’s often invisible. It turns tension into curiosity, misalignment into awareness, and misunderstandings into opportunities to grow.

When Strengths Collide

That retreat moment? It finally makes sense now.

Our developer is wired to be analytical and driven by excellence. My dad’s top strengths are belief and responsibility.

Both are incredible traits, but without awareness, they clashed.

It wasn’t a flaw. It was friction without a framework.

And that’s the point: whether you’re leading a church, a startup, or a small team, you can’t lead what you don’t understand.

Strengths coaching has helped me move from guessing to knowing. From reacting to responding. From tension to trust.

The Leadership Invitation

It’s easy to assume everyone sees the world the way you do. But they don’t, and that’s a gift, not a problem.

When you know how your people are wired, you can lead them better. Period.

  • You can give them projects that actually energize them.

  • You can pair teammates who balance each other out.

  • You can recognize when conflict is really just two strengths colliding.

That’s how you build a culture where people thrive.

I can’t go back and rewrite that awkward moment at the retreat, but I’m grateful for it. Because it forced me to grow.

Lead With What You Know

Sometimes your biggest leadership wins come from your most uncomfortable moments.

If you’ve been feeling stuck in team tension, or you just want to lead with more clarity and confidence, consider working with a Strengths Coach.

Don’t just guess what motivates your team. Learn it.
Don’t just manage personalities. Understand them.
Don’t wait for the next awkward meeting to ask, “What just happened?”

Lead with insight. Lead with intention. Lead with Strengths.
