Discover Church Went From Manual Chaos to Automated Follow-Up With Text In Church

Pastor Noah Upton and his team in Decatur, Illinois share how Text In Church transformed their guest follow-up from a stressful, manual process into an automated system that actually keeps people engaged.
The Challenge: Manual Everything, and It Was Not Working
Before Text In Church, Discover Church had a communication problem that most small church staffs know well. Getting a message out to the full congregation was hard. Getting a message to a specific group was even harder. And automated follow-up? That was not happening at all.
Every interaction required individual effort. Every follow-up was done by hand. And the weight of that kept building.
"Before Text In Church, communication was pretty difficult, honestly, to get the word out to the masses and even to just smaller, specific groups was rather difficult. And then automated messages and things like that. We did not even have anything happening like that. It was all manually done and took a lot of time, and it was a little bit stressful..."
That kind of strain does not just slow a team down. It limits what the church can do for the people walking through its doors for the first time.
What Made Them Choose Text In Church
Discover Church found Text In Church through online channels and social media while searching for a better texting solution. The features stood out. But what sealed the decision was something more practical: integration.
Their existing database held hundreds of contacts. The idea of re-entering all of that manually was a dealbreaker for any new platform they considered.
"What really made us decide to take the next step is all of the features that Text In Church had, and really, its integration with other programs that we were using. That was a huge key factor. We were not going to have to manually put in hundreds or thousands of contacts and things like that. It was going to sync right up with our database and even let us put specific groups of people in there in lists in our other program that then transferred right over into Text In Church."
The contacts synced. The groups transferred. The team could get started without rebuilding everything from scratch.
What They Built With It
Once they were up and running, Discover Church built a guest follow-up system that works without anyone having to remember to send a text.
When a new visitor fills out a "new here" form, an automated message goes out immediately. Then another at three days. Another at one week. Another at two weeks. Each one is simple and personal, just keeping up with people and letting them know the church is paying attention.
"We saw a huge change in our guest follow-up. We have a system where they can fill out a new here form. And as soon as they fill out the new here form, now they are able to get an immediate text telling them, thank you for filling out the new here card. We are so glad you were here. And then they are getting automated messages in intervals of like three days, a week, two weeks, just keeping up with them, simply trying to do life together with them. And we have gotten so much engagement back from that as well."
Beyond guest follow-up, TIC also became the go-to tool for keeping volunteers and members in the loop on events and activities. And with mass texting now in the picture, people started responding. Prayer requests came in. Praise reports followed. What used to be one-way announcements turned into real conversations.
The Outcome, In Pastor Upton's Words
Pastor Upton recommends Text In Church to other church leaders without hesitation. His pitch is simple: the platform is easy to get into, the features go deep once you need them, and the results start showing up fast.
His advice to other pastors considering it is to dive in and not wait. The engagement will follow.
For Discover Church, the shift was clear. A team that used to chase follow-up manually now has a system that runs in the background, reaching guests consistently, building connection over time, and freeing up staff to focus on the people right in front of them.
Ready to Stop Doing It All by Hand?
If your team is still managing guest follow-up manually, Text In Church can help you build a system that works even when your staff is focused elsewhere.
